How Deleted-File Recovery Normally Works
On a traditional hard drive, deleting a file usually just removes its entry from the file system’s index; the underlying data often remains physically present on the platter until something else overwrites it. Recovery tools work by scanning for that leftover data.
SSDs store data differently, in NAND flash cells organized into blocks and pages, and they cannot simply overwrite a page the way a hard drive overwrites a sector — a page must be erased before it can be rewritten. This is where TRIM comes in.
What TRIM Actually Does
TRIM is a command the operating system sends to the SSD’s controller after a file is deleted, telling the drive which NAND pages are no longer in use. The SSD’s controller uses that information to erase those pages in the background, ahead of time, so future writes are faster. TRIM is a legitimate performance and drive-longevity feature — it is not a security-wipe tool, but its side effect is that it clears the underlying data proactively, rather than waiting for new data to overwrite it.
Once a page has actually been erased by TRIM, the original data in that page is gone at the hardware level. No software-based recovery tool can read data out of a cell that has been erased.
What Determines Whether Recovery Is Possible

What to Do If You Have Deleted Data on an SSD
- Stop using the drive immediately. Every additional write operation gives the controller another opportunity to reuse space, including space TRIM has already marked as free.
- Do not run disk optimization, defragmentation, or “SSD trim” utilities manually — if TRIM has not already processed the deletion, running it manually will.
- Do not install recovery software onto the same drive you are trying to recover from; installing anything writes new data to the drive.
- Have the drive assessed before deciding it’s unrecoverable. The only way to know what is actually still present is to examine the drive directly.
