Controller Failure

The onboard controller manages how data is mapped across the NAND chips. A controller fault can make an otherwise healthy SSD unreadable or undetected.

Firmware Corruption

Corrupted firmware can prevent a drive from initializing correctly, even though the NAND storage itself is undamaged.

Logical Corruption

File system corruption, a failed firmware update, or a software fault can make data inaccessible without any physical damage to the drive.

Connector / PCB Damage

External and M.2 SSDs can suffer physical damage to the connector or circuit board, particularly in portable use.

NAND-Level Faults

Important: What Not To Do

  • Do not run disk-repair, TRIM, or optimization utilities on an SSD you suspect has failed — these can permanently alter stored data.
  • For SSDs where TRIM has already cleared the relevant NAND pages, deleted-file recovery may be impossible or significantly limited — this is a limitation of how SSDs manage storage, not a recovery failure.
  • Do not assume chip-off recovery is possible for every SSD — it depends on the drive's controller and encryption, and is not always technically viable.
  • Avoid repeatedly power-cycling a drive that is not detected; some controller faults can be worsened by repeated connection attempts.
